Atmospheres

(2015-2016)

This work began as a way of watching planets we will not reach. I was interested in atmospheres that didn’t exist - fake weather, synthetic dusk, glitch-born horizons ("...the sky above the port..."). The images arrived through manual filters, dead apps, outmoded workflows — all gestures made to produce something both cosmetic and cosmological. At the time, everyone was discovering new exoplanets, these could be skies, or colour corrections, or failed renderings of the Earth that comes next. Each file degraded as it was made. I never intended to finish the series. Some of the colours feel real. Others are probably illegal in nature. This is not a science fiction project, but it isn’t not one either. If there is nostalgia here, it’s for a future we were promised on album covers and weather reports. I made these images late at night on software which no longer works.
