Words & Sounds is an interactive workshop at Brown Books, High Town, exploring sound-making through objects, words and voice. Set in a community bookshop, the sessions use books, pages, spoken language and simple live sound tools as starting points for collective listening, recording and composition.
Participants will experiment with the sounds of paper, page-turning, tapping, breath, repeated words and short spoken passages, while also exploring how stories and scenes can suggest their own hidden sound-worlds. The workshop moves between listening exercises, playful vocal and text-based activities, group improvisation, and a light introduction to simple recording techniques. Using microphones and looping, participants will build layered sound pieces from fragments of language, everyday sounds and shared imagination.
Rather than approaching books only as something to read, Words & Sounds opens them up as material for rhythm, texture, atmosphere and collaborative creation. The sessions are designed to be hands-on, accessible and exploratory, offering a chance to discover how language, listening and ordinary objects can become part of a shared sound-making process.
Suitable for mixed ages and open to all levels of experience, the workshop is ideal for anyone interested in sound, spoken word, storytelling, listening, or experimental ways of making and recording together.
Limited spaces available. Free with booking.
